Navajo Name(s)

Residing in the regions of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado, the Navajo Indian Tribe also refers to themselves as "Dineh". This term they use to refer to their tribe is translated to "the people". The area that they reside in was heavily fought for, since the Spanish and other Indian tribes insisted on taking over their land.

I believe having different names or nicknames is a common thing for many people around the world. I have a couple of nicknames myself. My friends and family refer to me as Kim, Kimmy, Kimberly, Kimbo, and Kimantha. Nicknames can be unique to the person who gives it to you, and it could tell a story behind its meaning and how you got the nickname.

Mission: The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project is a cultural anthropology course-based
project meant to raise critical consciousness about the rich cultural diversity in our
indigenous world. Being totally aware of the limitations of being outsiders, we are a
group of multidisciplinary undergraduate students who believe in cross-cultural
sensitivity and participatory agency aimed at disseminating information about
indigenous realities as accurately as possible.

Vision: The iCross-Cultural Citizen Project’s vision is to create an online cross-cultural
space for students, professionals, and youth to learn and exchange cross-culturally
sensitive information about contemporary indigenous experiences. From that outsider
student’s perspective, we will try to theoretically explore possible collaborative solutions
to problems that affect the indigenous populations of our planet. Finally, we hope for the
future creation of a space where indigenous youth can share their experiences and their
realities with us for real mutual collaboration to take place.

vulnerable populations in the world.

. We value the equal treatment of people, and we are against the exploitation of vulnerable groups around the world.

Background:

The Navajo Indians did not start off with a bright past; they endured many hardships like invasions from the Spanish, The United States Military and others. After a very violent history between the United States and the Navajo, a peace treaty was signed August 12^th, 1868. The Navajo Treaty of 1868 between the Navajo and the United States made agreements about peace and friendship, reservation boundaries, U.S. building development, residence and land ownership, education, and material ownership. The signing of the treaty was the conclusion to extreme hardships the Dine People went through during the historic Long Walk to Fort Sumner, New Mexico. All these tragedies helped to grow them into the culture and tradition rich tribe they are today. Today the tribe is still growing strong and one of the most influential of all Native American tribes because their traditions and history have been passed down from generation to generation.

Geographic Location:

The Navajo Indians are the largest tribe in the United States with a population of 180,462 people.
They live across 27,000 square miles of reservation covering Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and parts of Colorado.
